Have you just moved into your college dorm? Or are you planning to move to your dorm soon? Whether you’re going to be freshmen or a senior, you are going to need those essential back to school supplies. From traditional bedding sets to tech gadgets you need to make sure that you have everything you need to make the most of your year. Be it stationery, furnishings, bed and bath essentials, wardrobe, electronics or toiletries, this article will help you decide what the college dorm essentials are and if you need them.
Bed Rest Pillow
You need a bed rest pillow if you spend any time in your dorm room. This is going to be your best friend when you’re on your bed watching your shows, reading or just hanging out in your room. It’s way better than sitting with your back against the wall wishing you had the comfy life back home again.
Storage can be a biggest problem moving anywhere especially in dorms with small rooms. If you’re looking for a storage solution and want to store a lot of things in a small space, pack at least 6-7 inch bed risers with you. They will give you the storage space you need, right under your bed, so pack your bed risers for easy accessible and spacious storage. I personally would snag a pair of these USB Bed Lifts to have easy access for charging phones, tablets or laptops. Be sure your dorm has single beds vs bunk beds before purchasing this.
Because everyone needs a good night sleep to be productive and have a healthy life style. In college you might come across loud roommates, or noisy hall mates, and if you are a light sleeper ear plugs are must have accessories for you. You might go through a few of these if you’ve never worn them in order to find the ones that suit you best.
You can never have enough ear buds. I suggest keeping a backup pair of buds in your daily bag in case you misplace your regular ones.
Portable Shoe Storage
You have packed your casual shoes, your formal shoes, shoes for partying and now you do not have enough space to store them. Under the bed or behind the door hanging shoe storage is what you need to keep your shoes in order, and avoid the hustle of going through everything to find the pair that you want to wear. Check out your local dollar store to save on these.
You’re busy packing all the big things, like bedding, organizers, shoes and clothes, but you might forget the small most important things that you need for staying clean and hygienic. You need shower caddy! That is going to be your life saver when it’s time to shower. Get a quick dry shower caddy so it doesn’t get mold or other funky stuff growing. You’ll also want to be sure it has a big section in the middle for your towel, flip flops and bath wrap towel, if you’ll be utilizing the community showers and smaller sections around it for your hair products, body wash and brush.
This could be a life saver, if you’re lazy and just throw your clothes around and your dirty clothes get mixed up with clean clothes. Just throw all your dirty clothes in a laundry bag to keep them separated; and to remember to do laundry before the pile takes up all your clean clothes!
Because sometimes you just need to get away. Whether you’re going into the city with your friends or heading home for a 3 day weekend, you need a good weekend bag. I found this one to be pretty handy and it works for carry-on if you’re flying somewhere. If you’re really in a bind you could use a backpack and pack just what you need, no extra outfits for those indecisive types.
Don’t want to wait in long lines to get your morning coffee, or even worse skip it altogether to get to class, take a mini coffee maker with you to get that morning cup of coffee! Trust me, this is THE coffee maker to get. It brews K-cups, pods or ground coffee, this is the holy grail of single serve coffee makers. You never know when money is tight and you can’t buy your favorite k-cups but you can afford some Starbuck’s ground coffee from the local grocery store. Better to be prepared than have no coffee. Coffee is a must in college.
A Flexible Power Strip
You will need your phone and gadgets charged to answer all the phone calls from home, or to set reminders for assignments and class. A flexible and bendable power strip will come in real handy and will not break easily!
You can never be secure enough when it comes to privacy and handling gadgets, buy a laptop lock to protect your privacy and a laptop case to protect your laptop!
An External Drive/ USB
Similar to physical storage you might be in need of electronic storage especially if you are photography major. Keep an external hard drive with you for high storage and a USB drive for having the virtual items you need with you at all times. It will be a must have if you do not own a printer and take your project to your friend’s printer or the library for printing.
Be considerate of your roommate and keep clip lights with you. They will be helpful when one of you falls asleep early and the other one need the lights on. Clip lights can be kept on the frame of your bed and will give you the light you need to see everything. Make sure you check first to see if your clip on light opens far enough to clip onto where you want it.
You have a big test in an hour, your laptop is dead, you need to get to class and the only gadget you can use to revise the notes is your phone. Pack a portable phone charger or a charger case with you if you do last minute revisions from your phone, because you don’t know when and where you could charge your phone.
I hope this helps you in packing the things you need for your dorm! Depending on the sort of person you are you might need a lot less or a lot more than this, but this will clear up confusions about the essentials you need!
